Although every child has the potential to succeed, not every child has the opportunity. According to the current Charlotte-Mecklenburg Quality of Life Explorer, 75% of the households in Grier Heights receive Food and Nutrition Services compared with an average of 16% county-wide. Consequently, a disproportionate number of children from Grier Heights who attend Billingsville Elementary School and Alexander Graham Middle School qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch. Meanwhile, according to a report by the Foundation For The Carolinas, only 10% of children in Mecklenburg County have access to quality summer programs. In the summer, low-income children lose 2 to 3 months in reading comprehension while their middle income peers make slight gains. As a result, 2/3 of the achievement gap is attributed to summer learning loss.
CrossRoads has partnered with Freedom School Partners Charlotte and Alexander Graham Middle School to provide a free six-week Freedom School for 70 children from Grier Heights, ranging in age from 2nd grade to rising 8th grade. Freedom School focuses on maintaining and developing literacy skills, the character skills that lead to positive academic and life outcomes, and providing children with a community that believes in them.
